Regimen 1 - summarised

effects of insulin over 24 hours

Regimen 1 Intermediate Acting Insulin given Twice Daily before Breakfast and Evening meals.

The intermediate acting insulin is a delayed action insulin which takes peak effect only after six hours or so. The first dose given in the morning before breakfast will cover the raised blood glucose period after lunch, and hopefully normalize it. In the same way, the second dose given in the late afternoon before the evening meal covers the raised blood glucose period after the bed-time snack and into the night No insulin is given to cover breakfast and Evening meal. This is because this regimen is often a starting regimen for newly diagnosed diabetic patients. The insulin therapy is deliberately made simple to prevent confusion and stress in a newly diagnosed patient. A short-acting insulin can later be added to cover any hyperglycaemia which may follow breakfast and/or Evening meal.
