Regimen 4 - summarised

Effect of insulin over 24 hours

Regimen 4 Short Acting Insulin given Thrice Daily before Breakfast, Lunch and Tea, and Long Acting Insulin given before Bed.

Short acting insulin is given before each of the main meals to cover the postprandial (after meal) raised blood glucose level. The long acting insulin given at bed time is to act in the background to meet the patient's basic insulin requirementThis regimen is designed to provide the patient with greater flexibility, and to achieve better control. The short acting insulin could be given to adapt to the patient's eating schedule, instead of his meal times being rigidly controlled by the insulin dosages which are to take effect at such and such a time. The drawback is there are more daily insulin injections, this may be intolerable to some patients
